AAA is projecting record travel numbers for the Thanksgiving holiday in Kansas and across the nation.

The organization is forecasting a total of 861,580 Kansans who will travel 50 miles or more from home for the holiday travel period, which runs from November 26th through December 2nd.  That will be an increase of two percent from a year ago.

More than 90 percent of the Kansans who travel will be on the road and the forecast is for 779,245 people to be on the highways, an increase of 1.4 percent from last year.   AAA is urging people to have their vehicles inspected to make sure it’s ready for the road trip.    AAA emergency roadside service crews responded to 2,448 calls for assistance during the Thanksgiving period last year.  The top three reasons were a vehicle breakdown requiring a tow, a dead battery and tire problems.

The average cost per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Kansas has been $2.70, about 30 cents less than the average a year ago.

AAA is expecting an increase of 1.7 percent in the number of Kansans who will travel by air for the holiday.

Nationwide, AAA is projecting 79.9 million travelers will go 50 miles or more from home, with 71.7 million traveling by car and 5.84 million flying domestically.
