Wichita City Council members and city staff got a look at the new emergency winter homeless shelter that will be opening soon. The shelter has been set up in the former Park Elementary School building at 1025 North Main, after the city acquired the building from the Wichita school district.
The facility has been set up in one section of the Park Elementary building and it will have 260 beds, with separate areas for men and women. It will be open from late November through March 31st and it will be operated by HumanKind Ministries, which operated the emergency shelter last year. HumanKind has been looking for volunteers to help with the operation of the shelter.
The shelter will have metal detectors and police will provide security.
The city is working to convert the building into a multi-agency center that will provide a one-stop location for services for the homeless.
