The Wichita Police Department is warning residents to watch out for a scam involving people posing as law enforcement officers and demanding payment for a warrant or missed jury duty.

The scammers will call a resident and falsely claim that he or she faces arrest unless a payment is made, and they will demand payment by Bitcoin or gift cards, and the police department said these are common red flags for fraud.

Police have several facts to keep in mind:

  • The Wichita Police Department will never ask for payment over the phone for any reason.
  • Scammers often use fear tactics to create a sense of urgency, pressuring you to act quickly without thinking. Be wary of anyone asking for personal information or payment in unusual ways.
  • If you receive such a call, do not engage with the caller. Simply hang up and contact your local police station or municipal court to verify the information. You can also file a police report to provide this information. Your prompt action can help prevent others from falling victim to these scams.
