Spirit Aerosystems has started a 21-day furlough for 700 workers at its Wichita facility.   The furlough is a result of the ongoing strike at Boeing.

The six-week strike has resulted in a backlog of planes for Boeing, so workers on the Boeing 767 and 777 programs at Spirit have been placed on furlough.   Spirit officials have said if the strike goes beyond November, they may have to look at more furloughs and possible layoffs.

Last week, 64-percent of Boeing machinists voted against the company’s contract offer, which included a 35-percent wage increase over the next four years, higher 401k contributions, guaranteed payouts in a bonus program and a higher signing bonus.

Over 30-thousand machinists walked off the job over a month ago.

Boeing reported a six-billion dollar loss during the last quarter, with an over eight-billion dollar loss from January through September.
