A Wichita man has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for planning several home and business burglaries through obituary notices.

The sentence was given to 50-year-old Gary Garrett, who was found guilty in August on 27 criminal charges.   He was convicted in three home burglaries, one business burglary and a number of charges of forgery, theft and identity theft.

The judge dismissed two theft counts because of duplication, and Garrett was sentenced to 120 months in prison plus 78 months in the Sedgwick County jail.  Prosecutors said several of the burglaries took place while families were attending funeral services, and when Garrett was arrested last November, he had a driver’s license for a person whose obituary he apparently found online.
