A dedication ceremony was held Saturday in Hutchinson for two new highway signs that have been created to honor a soldier from Haven who was killed in the Vietnam War.

The signs honor Army private Henry Lee Fisher, who died in combat on June 18th, 1967, shortly after he turned 20.   He joined the military after graduating from Haven High School in 1965, and he fought in the 16th Infantry – 1st Division, also known as The Big Red One.

The ceremony took place in the Neal Family Learning Center at the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson.

Fisher’s nephew, Jake Feil, said he came up with the idea of the highway signs as a bigger and better way to memorialize his uncle’s service and sacrifice.  With help from Kansas House member Joe Seiwert, legislation was created to authorize the signs.

Kansas Department of Transportation Crews will install the signs on K-96 at Haven.
