Kansas corrections officials are investigating the death of an inmate at the El Dorado Correctional Facility, and it’s being called a homicide investigation.
Prison officials said 40-year-old Brooks Vonthaer was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday afternoon. They later reported that Vonthaer had a number of fatal injuries.
A 34-year-old suspect has been identified, and prison officials said he was Vonthaer’s cellmate.
An autopsy has been ordered and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation is working with corrections officials to investigate the death. A report will be presented to the Butler County Attorney’s Office for a determination on charges.
Vonthaer was serving a 62-month sentence for four convictions of aggravated assault, criminal trespass, theft, and criminal damage in Shawnee County.
