A Wichita teenager has been given the maximum sentence for the fatal shooting of another teen earlier this year.
A judge has sentenced 15-year-old Talon Rico to juvenile corrections until he is 22 and a half years old, then he will be in aftercare until he is 23.
Rico entered a guilty plea to second degree murder in September. He was charged in the February 2nd death of 17-year-old Julio Ruiz of Wichita. Police said there were five boys gathered in the 100 block of North Zelta, talking about shooting a bullet into the ground. Investigators said Ruiz fired once into the ground, then Rico fired three or four times. Ruiz was hit by bullets from Rico’s gun, and he ran a short distance before he collapsed and died. Police said testing of Rico’s gun found that it fired like a normal handgun and there was nothing that would have caused it to recoil.
