The Wichita school board has voted to declare three recently-closed schools as surplus property. Clark and Payne elementary schools and Jardine Middle School were among six school buildings that closed last May.
USD 259 Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld made a presentation to the Wichita City Council on Tuesday about the district’s strategic plan, and he suggested that there could be discussions with the city or other public entities about future uses for Jardine, Clark and Payne. He said the board will begin the process of looking for future uses for the buildings. The state of Kansas will have to give its approval before the district can move forward with a plan for the buildings.
The board previously voted to declare the former Park Elementary School as surplus, and it was sold to the City of Wichita for development into a Multi-Agency Center for the homeless. The district is holding on to the former Hadley Middle School and Cleaveland Elementary buildings for possible future use.
