The two Vice Presidential candidates met Tuesday night for a debate in New York City, and they focused on a variety of topics.

Democrat Tim Walz says there’s proof that Kamala Harris’ economic policies can work. During Tuesday’s vice presidential debate hosted by CBS News, the Minnesota Governor pointed to economic polices that succeeded in his home state, such as lowering rents. Walz said former President Trump’s tax cuts while he was in office led to an increase in the national debt.  Republican Senator JD Vance said while Vice President Harris has been in office, she’s only made life unaffordable by raising food prices and letting illegal immigrants pass through open borders. He also argued former President Trump’s economic polices led to higher pay for American workers. On the issue of tax cuts, he said Trump’s tax policy led to “common sense wisdom.” Walz shot back that Trump’s handling of Covid led to America’s economic downturn.

JD Vance says the U.S. has to “stop the bleeding” at the southern border. During Tuesday’s debate hosted by CBS News, the Republican vice presidential nominee said Trump will start by deporting criminal migrants. Tim Walz responded by touting Vice President Harris’ record as California’s attorney general and prosecuting transnational gangs. He added that Democrats had a border bill on the table that included resources needed, but former President Trump told Republicans to vote “no” on it. Vance countered by saying Harris undid dozens of Trump’s executive actions on the border while she’s been in office.

The immigration issue in the city of Springfield, Ohio was again being highlighted on the national stage with the vice presidential debate. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz first brought up the community, accusing Senator JD Vance and former President Trump of villainizing the Haitian people living there. Vance responded by noting the strain put on Springfield’s healthcare facilities, schools, and housing system, blaming those problems on the Biden and Harris administration and what he called open borders.

Moderators did point out that the Haitians in Springfield are in the country legally. The microphones for Walz and Vance were cut before their comments on immigration went much further as the moderators moved on to another topic.
