The City of Wichita has filed a request with an agency under the Centers for Disease Control to investigate the recent death of a firefighter.

During a house fire on August 1st in the 9800 block of South Laura, near Haysville, 27-year-old firefighter Ty Voth collapsed and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.   He was assigned to Wichita Fire Station 5.

The city is asking the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety to investigate Voth’s death.  The agency has a Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program that conducts independent investigations of deaths in the line of duty, and it recommends steps to prevent future deaths and injuries.

The Wichita Fire Department, the Sedgwick County Fire District #1, the Derby Fire Department and the firefighters union in Wichita have declared support for an investigation of Voth’s death.

The agency will review Wichita’s application and the documents associated with the house fire response and decide if it will conduct an investigation.   It’s not known how long that process will take.
