A man and woman remain hospitalized after a domestic dispute led to a shooting in south Wichita, and they are expected to survive their injuries. The man will be facing charges when he is released.
That’s the word from Wichita police on an incident that happened Monday morning at 45th Street South and Clarence, near Cessna Elementary School. Police Chief Joe Sullivan said a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy responded to a shooting report at 9:15 a.m. The deputy encountered a 46-year-old Wichita man, who pointed a gun at the deputy and then ran to a 30-year-old woman. The deputy told the man to drop the gun, but the man put the gun to the woman’s head. The deputy fired two shots, but the man would not let go of the woman. It took two police officers and the deputy to disarm the man and subdue him during a struggle.
Chief Sullivan said an investigation found that the man and woman live together and have children together, and they got into an argument inside a vehicle that led to the woman being shot several times. The woman ran to Cessna Elementary, and she was chased by the man. A school employee saw the man with the gun and pulled a door shut, locking it so the man could not get inside. The school was placed on lockout as a precaution.
Sullivan said the man and woman are expected to recover, and the man will be facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He said USD259 staff handled the situation exactly as they should have to limit any risk to students and staff. In addition, he said Emergency Communications, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, the Wichita Police Department, Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services and Wichita Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and “worked collaboratively to manage a chaotic situation while limiting the risk to the public.”
Sullivan said the Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) will investigate the shooting. ALERT team investigators will present the facts of this case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charges.
