Sedgwick County deputies and Wichita police officers were on the scene in a south Wichita neighborhood where a shooting was reported Monday morning.

Sheriff Jeff Easter said a husband and wife got into a domestic dispute as they and their children were brought to Cessna Elementary School by a Lyft driver.  The children went into the school and then the dispute broke out, and witnesses reported seeing the man shoot the woman and then chase her toward the school.   A deputy arriving on the scene then shot the man after seeing him pointing a gun at the woman.

Both suspects were reported to be in critical condition after the shooting.

Officers moved into the area and they were talking to a number of witnesses to gather more information.

Cessna Elementary School, west of the shooting location, was locked down as a precaution but the school was not involved in the shooting.   The school district issued a statement on social media:

At approximately 9:20 a.m. there was an incident in front of Cessna Elementary School involving two adults. Shots were fired, multiple police officers are involved, and the area in front of Cessna Elementary is now restricted access due to an active crime scene. Immediately when the incident occurred, Cessna Elementary was placed on lockout (no one can enter the building) and students and staff are safe in their classrooms.
Wichita police later issued a statement for parents wanting to pick up their children to meet at the staging area for instructions.  Pickup was planned for the north entrance of Cessna Elementary on 45th Street South.
