Wichita police have released more information on a standoff involving a man who fired shots at Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputies.

Police Chief Joe Sullivan said a team of five deputies and a sergeant went to a home in the 8100 block of South Bernice around 1:20 Wednesday afternoon.  They were serving a felony warrant for failure to appear and contempt of court for threatening to shoot bail bondsmen.    The deputies confirmed that the wanted man was in the home and a K-9 unit from Haysville was sent to the home around 3 p.m.   The K-9 cleared the home but deputies determined that the man was in a bedroom.   Shortly before 4 p.m. a deputy broke out a bedroom window to send chemical munitions into the home, and shots were fired.   Two deputies returned fire when one firing three rounds and the other firing five.  No one was hit.

A Wichita-Sedgwick County SWAT team was sent to the home and negotiations began.   Chief Sullivan said the man made several threats to shoot officers if they tried to get into the home.   At 9 p.m. chemical munitions were sent into the home and more shots were heard.   The man contacted police and negotiations continued, and he surrendered peacefully at 11:30 p.m.

The man, identified as 43-year-old Robert Alan Cook, was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.   Officers are continuing to search the home and Chief Sullivan said the charges may be updated as more information is gathered.   Information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charges.

During a news briefing Thursday, Chief Sullivan showed two videos from deputies’ body cameras during the early attempt to take Cook into custody.
