The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is looking into a death after a fatal crash site was discovered in Harvey County.

The KBI said the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a property owner on Sunday afternoon about a pickup that had crashed on his rural property.  Deputies found a man dead inside the pickup, which was in a field near mile marker 32 at the Highway 50 and I-135 interchange.    Investigators believe the pickup went off the road and crashed into a tree.

The pickup is registered to 42-year-old Jonathan Clayton of Peabody.  He was the interim city clerk in Peabody, and he was reported missing on August 3rd.  Media reports said Clayton was the center of an investigation into the loss of COVID-19 funding for a local program called Peabody Main Street.
