Two 14-year-old girls have been charged with first degree murder in the death of a 93-year-old Augusta woman, and a judge has ruled that the girls will remain in custody.

The girls were arrested late last week for the September, 2023 murder of 93-year-old Joanne Johnson.  A detention hearing was held Monday in Butler County District Court, and a judge set a date of Thursday, August 29th for their first appearance in court.   The names of the girls have not been released, and it’s not known if they will be charged as juveniles or as adults.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation announced the arrests and said there was no known connection between the girls and Johnson.  The KBI also said that there were no tips received on the case.
