McConnell Air Force Base plans changes for upcoming airshow

Wichita’s McConnell Air Force Base will have its Frontiers in Flight Open House and Airshow on August 24th and 25th, and there will be some changes for this year’s event.

The event is free and open to the public, but people over 18 years of age will have to show a state or federal government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, in order to access the base.   Non-U.S. citizens over 18 can use a passport or permanent resident alien card.

Visitors are allowed to bring a non-glass container of water, which they can refill at stations on the base.   McConnell’s Chief of Public Affairs, John Van Winkle, encourages visitors to have a hydrating powder to add to the water after they get onto the base.   With temperatures expected to be in the mid-90s, it will be important to have a hydrating fluid to drink to help prevent heat-related illnesses.

There will be free water-fill locations in the general public parking lot and on the airshow ramp for refilling personal water containers.   The base will also have cooling tents, portable restrooms and first aid stations.

Parking will be available in the fields owned by Cessna, south of Pawnee and west of Rock Road.  There will be buses to transport people to and from the airshow entrance, but there will be large distances of walking, so hydration will be important with the hot temperatures.

For those bringing small children, wristbands are available at the entry points to the flightline, to allow adults to write a phone number on the band and put it on the child’s wrist. Should the adults and children become separated, that phone number will facilitate a quick reunion with their adults.  The Lost Child RV will be located near the Kids Zone and close to the Boeing Dreamlifter.  The Dreamlifter will be the largest aircraft on the ramp, on the north end of the runway area and near the STEAM and Kid Zones. Changing stations and a dedicated nursing area will also be nearby.

The Budweiser Clydesdales will appear at 11:30 a.m. both days, and the airshow begins at noon.  The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are scheduled to perform at 3 p.m. each day. There will be a variety of aircraft on display, including the Doc B-29 Superfortress and the Boeing Dreamlifter.
