U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland met with local law enforcement officials and announced a grant for Kansas during a visit to Wichita on Thursday.

Garland said collaborative efforts between local, state and federal agencies are working in the effort to stop violent crime and drug trafficking.  He noted that violent crime was down 3.7% last year in Kansas, according numbers from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.   He added, “And nationwide, we saw one of the lowest violent crime rates in 50 years and the largest drop in homicides in 50 years, and that progress appears to be continuing again in 2024.”

Garland announced that Kansas has received an $846,000 federal grant under the Sexual Assault Services Program to support the establishment, maintenance, and expansion of rape crisis centers.

After making a brief opening statement to reporters at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Garland met with Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan and Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter, as well as U.S. Attorney for Kansas Kate Brubacher and other law enforcement officials.
