It’s off to Colorado for the Awesome today. 4 high school girls, students at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado invented something they call “Project Deer,” that could save thousands of animals, personal property and even human lives. Their state has a major problem with drivers colliding with wildlife. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, there are close to 4-thousand collisions every year that cost drivers an estimated $80-million. So the teens worked to engineer something that everyone can put on their cars to avoid those accidents. The all-female team of four created a device for the “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow” contest that uses infrared cameras, an algorithm and machine learning to notify drivers when an animal is near or in the road. The best part is how inexpensive the new tech is. It uses four $5 infrared sensors, which could help make it widely available when it hits the market. Doing something to make the world better and safer, THAT’S AWESOME.
