Wichita’s park and recreation department will close the public swimming pools for the season on Sunday, August 11th, while the splash pads will remain open through Sunday, September 29th.
The school year for many families in the area will begin the week of August 12th. In past years, the city would close the pools at the beginning of the school year and keep them open on weekends through Labor Day, but that won’t be the case this year. Because of the ongoing drought and the need to conserve water, the city will close all pools on August 11th, and they will not be open the next few weekends. The pools lose about 3,000 gallons of water per day through evaporation alone.
The city’s 11 open splash pads will be open through September 29th. More information on the pools and splash pads can be found at the city’s web site wichita.gov/aquatics
