The Kansas Department of Commerce has announced a block grant award to support a regional water project in the southeast part of the state.

A Community Development Block Grant of $1 million will go toward a project to improve water access for the cities of Caney and Coffeyville.  The $7.9 million project will improve water infrastructure and ensure reliable access to clean water for the residents of the two communities.

The plan is for the City of Caney to purchase water from the City of Coffeyville and deliver it to Caney by installing 14 miles of piping. The pipeline will extend from Caney’s elevated water storage located at 400 N. Fawn, along HWY 166 to Cline Road in Coffeyville, where it will connect to Coffeyville’s 12” water main.

Caney has faced a water shortage crisis for the past year because of the ongoing drought.  The city’s drinking water comes from the Little Caney River, which has had a severe impact from the drought over the past two years.
