Wichita police said they arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with a shooting that happened downtown late Monday night. The shooting left a man with a critical injury.
Officers were called to the 100 block of South St. Francis around 11:30 p.m. on a report of a large disturbance, and a short time later there was a report of a shooting victim near Douglas and Broadway. Police found a 64-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police said the victim and his wife were walking near Naftzger Park when they got into an argument with a group of young people. That led to a physical fight and several people chased the victim to a parking lot, where the shooting took place. The teenager was later taken into custody and booked for aggravated battery and attempted murder. Information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for the filing of charges.
Police Chief Joe Sullivan issued a statement: “Once again, this incident underscores the serious dangers when young people have access to firearms. A juvenile having access to a firearm on our streets is unacceptable. This must stop. The safety of our community is our top priority, and we will not tolerate such violent behavior.”
The investigation is continuing, and anyone with information is urged to contact investigators at 268-4407, or Crime Stoppers at 267-2111.
