A line of severe thunderstorms moved across south central Kansas late Tuesday afternoon, bringing wind gusts of 65 miles an hour, bringing down trees and power lines.

The storms developed in Kingman and Harper counties and then moved east into Reno, Harvey, Sedgwick, Sumner, Butler and Cowley counties.  Wind gusts of 60 to 65 mph were reported near Eisenhower National Airport, and a gust of 67 mph was reported near Viola.

Evergy was reporting over 23,000 customers without power in its service area because of downed power lines.  Around 8,000 customers were without power in scattered areas of Wichita at one point.   There were still around 600 customers without power late Wednesday morning as crews continue to work to restore electricity to the area.

Winds caused a fireworks tent to collapse on Highway 54 in Andover and there were reports of three people injured.  One was taken to a hospital for treatment.   Butler County Emergency Management reported tree limbs and power lines down in the Augusta area.   A wind gust of 70 mph was reported by emergency management near Burns, in Marion County.   Winds also collapsed a fireworks tent in Newton as the storms moved through.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for south central Kansas through the evening hours.
