AAA is projecting that 70.9 million travelers nationwide will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period.

For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.

A record 60.6 million people will be driving to their destinations during the holiday week, and a record 5.74 million people will be traveling by air.  AAA presented a breakdown of the numbers:

  • 685,147 – Number of Kansans who will travel 50 miles or more from home for the July 4 holiday travel period (June 29-July 7), an increase of 4.2% from 2023.
    • 85.4% – Percentage of Kansas travelers who will drive to their July 4 holiday destination. The 585,169 road trippers is a 3.8% increase from last year.
  • 70.9 million – Number of travelers nationwide AAA projects will travel for the July 4 holiday, a 5% increase compared to 2023 and 8% increase over 2019.
    • 60.6 million – Number of travelers nationwide who will drive to their July 4 destinations. This represents an additional 2.8 million road travelers during the holiday in 2023.
  • 6th – Ranking of Kansas in the lowest average gas prices in the nation. (As of 6/27/24. Source: https://gasprices.aaa.com/)
    • $3.10 – Kansas average cost per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, as of 6/27/24, 15 cents less than the average one year ago.
  • 17% – Increase in price of domestic hotels this July 4th week compared to last year.
  • 7% – Percent increase in the number of people who will travel by air nationwide this July 4 holiday. Kansas air travel will be up 5.1%.
  • 2.99 million – The record number of passengers security screened by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on June 23, 2024. TSA is expecting another new record on June 28. So far, 2024 has seen 7 of the top 10 highest air passenger volume days in TSA history.
  • $800 – Average price for a domestic roundtrip flight for July 4 holiday travel, based on AAA Travel bookings. This is 2% lower than last year.
  • 4.6 million – Number of people nationwide expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million
  • $1,420 – Average cost of cruises departing from U.S. cities this July 4th, 24% cheaper compared to the same holiday last year.
