Missouri Governor Mike Parson is not planning to call lawmakers into a special session this year to respond to an effort by the state of Kansas to lure the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals.
Parson said next year will be critical in coming up with a plan for keeping the teams in the state of Missouri, and he said his office has been talking with both teams.
Kansas legislators approved a plan during a special session earlier this month to offer STAR bonds that would finance new stadiums for the teams. This followed a rejection by Missouri voters of a plan to continue a three-eighths-of-a-cent sales tax to help finance a new stadium for the Royals and upgrades at Arrowhead Stadium. Officials with both teams later said that leaving Missouri would be an option that they could consider.
