The Wichita school board voted in a special meeting Thursday to approve the sale of the former Park Elementary School building to the City of Wichita.

The vote was 6-1, with board member Kathy Bond voting no, to approve the sale.   The school district will sell the building to the city for one dollar.

Park Elementary at 1025 North Main was one of six schools closed by the district at the end of the school year because of a budget shortfall.   The city plans to convert the building into a multi-agency center to provide shelter and services to the homeless.

There are still more steps to be taken.  The Kansas Legislature will have to approve the sale because the school is a state-owned building.   The Wichita City Council plans to take action at its July 2nd meeting to purchase the building and then it will have to be rezoned.
