Severe thunderstorms moved across south central Kansas Tuesday evening, bringing very heavy rains and strong winds that caused damage to trees and power lines.

KFDI’s weather partners at Storm Team 12 estimated the rate of rainfall at 8 to 9 inches per hour as the storms moved through Wichita, limiting visibility and causing street flooding.   A flood warning was issued for Sedgwick and Butler counties until 7:45 a.m. Wednesday.

There was a report of damage to tree limbs and power poles northwest of Haysville.   Evergy was reporting scattered outages across the Wichita area with at least 2,300 customers without power.   Wind gusts of 60 miles an hour were reported in Wichita and also in Belle Plaine and in Derby.

Wichita’s Riverfest postponed evening activities until the storm moved through.  Street flooding was reported across Wichita, Park City and Valley Center.

Ping-pong-ball-sized hail was reported in McPherson.  There were no reports of large hail in the Wichita area as the storms moved through.
