Event to mark 50th anniversary of iconic Wichita sculpture

An event will be held in Wichita on Saturday to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic “Keeper of the Plains” sculpture.

Events will be held throughout the day at the Mid-America All-Indian Museum to celebrate the sculpture created by Native American artist Blackbear Bosin.   The major portion of the schedule begins at 1 p.m. and it is free to the public.

1:00-1:30 p.m.  Keeper Rededication Ceremony, Opening Remarks

1:00-5:00 p.m. Keeper Kids Zone, Outdoor Festival, Community Partners, Food Trucks

1:00-5:00 p.m.  Native Performances: Brandon Buffalohead (flute), AJ Harvey (actor/singer), Powwow Dancers- Indigenous Enterprise and more!

1:00-8:00 p.m.  Native Elders Council Concession Sales

1:00-8:00 p.m.  Free Arkansas River Rides from the SS Waterwagon, operated by the Wichita Wagonmasters. (Boarding near the Douglas Street bridge; rides departing app. every 20 minutes to the Keeper and back.)

2:00-5:00 p.m.  Powwow Indoors | Free Museum Admission

4:30 p.m.           Indian Taco Sale (until they sell out)

6:00-8:00 p.m.  Powwow Indoors | Free Museum Admission

9:00 p.m.           Fireworks over the river, set to Native music (View from the back grounds) 

The event is sponsored by the City of Wichita, Sedgwick County, The Mid-America All Indian Museum’s Bosin Society, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas, and other sponsors.
