Wichita City Council members have voted to move ahead with a project to repair and reopen the main building at a west side park.
The building at Pawnee Prairie Park at 2625 South Tyler Road has been closed and boarded up because of damage from vandalism and theft. The city is planning to use $400,000 in capital funding to add a security system, repair damaged facilities and deal with maintenance and safety issues. Tim Kellams with the city’s Public Works Department said the city will develop programs for the building or lease it to an organization. He said there have been talks with groups interested in the building and there’s a variety of options for the future.
Kellams said the city may hire an architect to design the renovations of the building. He said some maintenance and repair work could be done in the next few months, but the larger renovations will take longer.
