Wichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research will receive more than $10 million from NASA for research on the development of advanced materials for hypersonic aircraft.

The funding will enable continued research aimed at developing and maturing high temperature advanced materials for use in hot structures and thermal protection systems for hypersonic vehicles.  This will be key to the development of hypersonic systems.

The research program will add to existing resources available through Wichita’s National Defense Prototype Center (NDPC), a collaboration between NIAR and Spirit AeroSystems.

Kansas Senator Jerry Moran requested the funding from NASA on behalf of Wichita State.  He said the funding will grow NASA’s footprint in Kansas and bring more space and aerospace jobs and opportunities to the state.
