Wichita officials reported Sunday that they had to shut down the city’s computer network after discovering that several systems had been encrypted by malware.
The city said some services may be temporarily unavailable while systems are off line. The city is taking measures to continue operations with a minimum of disruption and staff will be working with third-party specialists to restore the computer network.
It’s believed that city systems were targeted by ransomware. Local and federal law enforcement agencies have been notified and they are working with the city. Systems will be restored on a gradual basis to minimize disruptions, but there’s no timeline for full restoration of online services.
The city said emergency services and first responders are continuing to provide service. Payment systems for such things as court citations and water bill payments are not available.
