One person was killed and several others were injured in a three-vehicle crash early Sunday in southeast Kansas.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said a pickup, a car and an SUV were involved in the crash around 1:30 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 160 about three and a half miles west of Independence, in Montgomery County. Troopers said the eastbound pickup went left of center and hit the car head-on. The SUV driver tried to avoid the crash but was also hit by the pickup.
The driver of the pickup, 18-year-old Kasenn Dollar of Liberty, Kansas, was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old passenger was taken to a Coffeyville hospital with minor injuries. Two juveniles were also in the pickup but their conditions are not known.
The car that was hit by a pickup was a Montgomery County sheriff’s vehicle, and the deputy was injured in the crash. He was identified as 26-year-old Justin Ward of Independence, and he was flown to hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma with serious injuries.
The driver of the SUV, a 28-year-old Independence man, is another Montgomery County deputy who was following Ward’s vehicle. The second deputy was not hurt.
