Parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and a dozen other states will be affected by a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th.  Kansas transportation officials are urging travelers to plan ahead if they will be going into the path of totality.

Kansas is not in the direct viewing area of the total eclipse, and the path of totality will run through eastern Texas into central Arkansas and into extreme southeast Missouri.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is urging travelers to be patient, practice safe driving habits, watch the roadway and watch for other drivers who may be distracted.

AAA Kansas says travelers can expect traffic jams and full hotels along the path of the eclipse.

  • Sky gazers could take to the roads at the last minute, looking for a good view of the eclipse.
  • Get to your destination early – even a day before – to scout out the best and safest place to view the eclipse
  • Expect increased travel (and subsequently traffic) up to and including April 8.
  • Have plenty of gas in your vehicle so you don’t run out if stuck in traffic
  • Pack your patience, whether traveling great distance or locally, people will be out and about to catch a glimpse of the eclipse.
  • If you plan to stay in a hotel, book now and expect that many in the path of totality may already be sold out

AAA also has safety tips for people who may be driving during the eclipse:

  • Keep headlights on.
  • Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.
  • Do NOT wear eclipse glasses while driving.
  • Do NOT try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.
  • Do NOT pull over to the side of the road, highway or interstate to view the eclipse.
  • Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians that many be walking around with their eyes on the sky.

The eclipse will not be total in Wichita and it’s expected that there will be 87 percent coverage at 1:48 p.m.    Exploration Place has been selling Eclipse Watch Party packages, limited to 1,000 participants, including eclipse glasses.   Other watch parties were planned across the state.
