If you read the title and rolled your eyes, stop reading cause clearly you’ve already closed your mind off to the possibility that Beyonce’s new album “Cowboy Carter” might actually have some worth to it. For the rest of you – a review later, but right now, I want to focus on the one track I was really interested in – “Jolene”.
Is it the same beat track as “Texas Hold ’em” (which I’m a big fan of btw), yes it is. Does that feel a little lazy? Sure. But, even with that, the real reason I wanted to listen to it, is because I had to believe she was going to put a Beyonce twist on the lyrics, and boy did she. With lyrics like:
“I raise that man I raised his kids”
“I can easily understand
Why you’re attracted to my man
But you don’t want this smoke, so shoot your shot with someone else (You heard me)”
She surplants the original and takes away Dolly Parton’s attempt to plead and negotiate, which seems so nice…but that’s Dolly, right?
Queen B ain’t playin’
If not for the same beat track as Texas Hold em….it gets 5 stars….but it’s a solid 4, it’s catchy, it’s fun to listen to and yes, I believe it belongs on country radio as country radio exists today.
and if you still don’t think Beyonce belongs in country….here’s a little history lesson courtesy of a really good Amazon Prime documentary “For Love and Country”
Here’s the review I promised from USA Today
