Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter has released more information as his office continues an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting in Haysville.

Easter said Haysville police received a call from a woman who said her boyfriend was suicidal and he had a handgun with him.   Officers went to a Haysville home and talked to the woman, and she showed them text messages she had received.   An officer left the home to look for the man, identified as 68-year-old Bill Osterhout.

Officers found Osterhout around 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of a liquor store in the 200 block of North Main.   Osterhout was in his pickup and an officer began talking to him, and other officers arrived and approached the pickup.   One officer saw that Osterhout had a gun and he warned other officers.  Two officers on the passenger side talked to Osterhout and during that conversation, Osterhout pointed the gun at his head and at his chin.    Easter said Osterhout made suicidal statements and asked officers to shoot him, and the officers said they did not want to do that.   At one point, Osterhout pointed the gun at one of the officers, then two other officers fired at the pickup.  Easter said the two officers fired a combined 22 rounds.

Easter is asking anyone who may have video or witnessed the incident should call the Sheriff’s Office Investigations section at 660-5300.   He said the investigation is continuing and when it is complete, information will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.   The investigation is expected to take about three weeks.

Easter revealed a photo from an officers body-worn camera and a brief video showing Osterhout in the pickup with the gun.   He said officers had been called Sunday night to a report of an argument between Osterhout and his girlfriend, but he’s not aware of any other previous calls that were made.
