The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said three construction workers from Wichita, Kansas were struck by a car at a job site Monday morning. One of the workers was killed.
The workers were part of a Wildcat Construction crew working on a bridge embankment on southbound I-35 near Tonkawa, Oklahoma. They were struck by a passenger car around 8 a.m.
The worker who was killed was identified as 19-year-old Jacob Matuszczak. The other workers were 62-year-old Wayne Thomas and 19-year-old Alexis Batres. They were flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where Batres was in critical condition and Thomas was treated for leg injuries and released.
The driver of the car was a 17-year-old boy from Minnesota, and he was talking with troopers at the scene. The OHP said it appeared he had fallen asleep, but the investigation is continuing and information will be presented to the Kay County District Attorney’s Office.
