The City of Wichita has started construction on a new $357 million wastewater treatment facility that will improve water quality in the Arkansas River and reduce odor impacts in the southern part of the city.

A biological nutrient removal (BNR) facility is being constructed at Sewage Treatment Plant 2 near 57th Street South and Hydraulic.   Wichita City Council member Mike Hoheisel said this is the second largest infrastructure project in the city’s history.  He said the project will remove harmful pollutants from the Arkansas River, and he said it’s an investment in the health and well-being of the community.   Hoheisel said the new facility will bring significant increased odor control for the surrounding area and improve the quality of water discharges into the river.

The facility is expected to be completed in 2027.
