An aviation worker known as Wichita’s “Rosie the Riveter” was recognized in a ceremony at the State Capitol in Topeka.
Connie Palacioz was 18-years-old in 1944 when she began work at Boeing as a riveter on the B-29 Superfortress. She was part of the team that manufactured the aircraft “Doc” and she helped with the work to restore the plane in the 2000s. She recently celebrated her 99th birthdy and still portrays Rosie the Riveter at events supporting Doc.
Ceremonies were held Wednesday, March 20th in the House of Representatives general session and in the Senate chambers. The event was held in connection with Rosie the Riveter Day on March 21st. Rosie became an iconic character during World War II, and her image was used in a campaign to recruit women for factory jobs to replace men who had gone off to combat.
