Wichita City Council members have approved the transfer of a downtown property to Wichita State University and the University of Kansas for a project to create a Biomedical Campus.
The site is just under two acres in the 200 block of South Broadway. It is made up of two properties south of William, between Broadway and Topeka, that are currently used as parking lots.
WSU, WSU Tech, the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and the KU School of Pharmacy are working together on a $300 million project to create the campus. The first phase is for an eight-story building to combine programs from the schools, with advanced laboratories, clinical research and technology. Construction is expected to begin this spring with completion in 2026.
The facility will have over 3,000 students, 200 faculty and staff and it will support almost 1,600 new jobs. Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said the Biomedical Campus will be a transformational opportunity for downtown Wichita and for the entire city.
