A detention deputy in the Sedgwick County jail was attacked by an inmate early Friday in one of the jail pods.

The Sheriff’s Office said the deputy was trying to collect the inmate’s breakfast tray to be sent back to the kitchen, and the inmate walked out of the cell and into the dayroom of Pod 17.   The inmate was told to return to his cell, and he struck the deputy with his fist, leading to a struggle.  The inmate tried to drag the deputy into a cell but the deputy got free and returned to his desk in the dayroom, and a response them then arrived to help.

The deputy was taken to a hospital for treatment  The inmate, identified as 34-year-old Joshua Ratcliff, was taken to the jail on Thursday for a parole violation.   The incident is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit and a report will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office.
