Open up the doors to Heaven and let the old man in
Tuesday is supposed to be about Tacos right? Sadly, the universe had other plans. So, instead of Taco Tuesday, let’s make today Toby Tuesday in honor of Toby Keith.
From the fields of Oklahoma to Country Music legend, anyone who knew Toby at a young age, knew he was destined for something great. Country music legend, singer, songwriter, actor, businessman, the man who oozed patriotism and helped bring a country together after 9/11.
Toby Keith Covel, born July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma, wasn’t destined for stardom. His childhood echoed with the sounds of oil rigs and football plays, not music charts. Yet, fueled by a passion ignited in his grandmother’s supper club, Toby’s path took a detour, leading him to become a country music icon whose voice resonated with millions.
His early life was steeped in hard work. After high school, Toby spent time in the Oklahoma oil fields, mirroring his father’s footsteps. He even dabbled in semi-professional football, showcasing a different kind of grit. But music, the melody that had filled his youth, wouldn’t be silenced. He formed the Easy Money Band, traversing the bar circuit, honing his songwriting and captivating audiences with his rough-edged charm.
In 1993, his debut album, simply titled “Toby Keith,” exploded onto the scene. The lead single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” became a runaway hit, topping the charts and establishing Toby’s signature sound: a blend of traditional country storytelling with a modern rock edge. Songs like “Achy Breaky Heart” and “He Ain’t Worth Missin'” solidified his status as a rising star.
Throughout the ’90s, Toby churned out hit albums like “Boomtown” and “Blue Moon,” cementing his reputation as a prolific songwriter and engaging performer. His lyrics resonated with everyday people, painting vivid pictures of small-town life, working-class struggles, and unabashed patriotism. Tracks like “Living as Fast as I Can” and “I Love This Bar” became anthems, sung in honky-tonks and stadiums alike.
However, it was the events of 9/11 that truly propelled Toby into the national spotlight. Songs like “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” and “The Living Years” resonated deeply with a nation grappling with grief and seeking solace. Toby became a symbol of American pride and unity, his music offering a soundtrack of resilience and patriotism.
His ventures extended beyond music. He launched his own restaurant chain, “Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill,” and dabbled in acting, appearing in films like “Broken Lance” and “Beer for My Horses.” These endeavors showcased his entrepreneurial spirit and desire to connect with his audience on multiple levels.
Despite his immense success, Toby remained grounded in his Oklahoma roots. He became a vocal advocate for his home state, supporting local charities and events. His music continued to evolve, tackling social issues like addiction in “Get Drunk and Be Somebody” and celebrating working-class heroes in “American Ride.”
In 2022, Toby revealed a stomach cancer diagnosis, battling the illness with characteristic determination. Though the news shocked fans, it also served as a testament to his strength and resilience. His music, with its themes of perseverance and overcoming adversity, resonated even more deeply.
Toby Keith’s legacy extends far beyond chart-topping hits and awards (including two Entertainer of the Year awards from the Academy of Country Music). He gave voice to the working class, celebrated American values, and offered solace during times of national pain. His music, infused with authenticity and a touch of rebellion, continues to inspire and entertain millions. Though his story may not have begun in the spotlight, Toby Keith’s journey from Oklahoma fields to country music legend is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and a unique voice that resonated with a nation.
My career in radio started in country radio about the same time as Toby’s did…..this one hurts just a little bit more.
So find your “Red Solo Cup”….fill it up…..raise it up…and sing a Toby Keith song or two today…..and have a taco for Toby.
I think we can all agree……there will NEVER be another Toby Keith
