Today, JJ’s Star Spangled Salute honors Marine Veteran Purcell Johnson. Johnson wasn’t only a Marine, he was a Montford Point Marine. Montford Point served as the first training site for African American Marines and was over 300 miles from Parris Island, where the white soldiers trained. Despite the racial struggles of the time, Johnson would go on to be promoted as high as sergeant. Although he is not alive to see it, his part in a trailblazing history earned himself a Congressional Gold Medal on Saturday. The medal was posthumously accepted by his 104-year-old sister, Romay Davis, who herself is a Congressional Gold Medal recipient. Congratulations Purcell and THANK YOU for your service.
