Snow was falling Christmas morning in northwest and north central areas of Kansas, with amounts of 2 to 4 inches expected through Tuesday.

Lighter amounts were expected in central Kansas, including Wichita and areas to the north, where a trace to an inch could fall.    The heaviest snow is expected to fall north of Interstate 70 into Tuesday.  A blizzard warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday for counties in northwest Kansas and southern Nebraska.

Traffic cameras were showing a light coating of snow across northern Kansas with little accumulation on the major highways Monday morning.  Roadways in Smith, Jewell, Republic, Washington and Cloud counties in northern Kansas were completely covered with snow.   U.S. Highway 81 north of Belleville was snowpacked.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported several slide-off accidents on I-70 in western Kansas on Sunday, and westbound lanes were closed for a time west of milepost 5.

KFDI’s weather partners at KWCH Storm Team 12 were expecting snow to be possible across the rest of the state Monday night and throughout the day on Tuesday. Gusty winds could lead to reduced visibility as snow falls, and there will be impacts on travel.
