Crews got a man out of the basement of a burning home Thursday afternoon in south Wichita. The two-alarm fire was reported around midday in the 900 block of South Topeka and crews saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor.
A second alarm was called in because of the design of the home and the belief that someone was trapped inside. A man was found in the basement, unaware of the fire. He was brought out and he refused treatment for minor smoke inhalation.
The home was divided into apartments and a warming fire was found at the back of the house. Fire officials said several homes in the neighborhood have been occupied by transients.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
