The City of Wichita is making plans to build a new police substation on the city’s west side.
The City Council has approved a land purchase from the Wichita School District for a five-acre property at 13th and Country Acres, near Northwest High School. The purchase price will be $450,000.
The current Patrol West substation at Central and Elder was built in 1991 to house 40 officers, and it now houses 115 officers. Patrol West Captain Jason Cooley said space is limited for expansion because it is shared with a Wichita Fire Department station and because of the age and size of the current building.
The new station will have about 25,000 square feet and it will have space for a public reception area, patrol and community policing operations, evidence processing and storage and other needs.
The budget for the project is $11.1 million, and construction is expected to begin next summer, with completion in July of 2025.
City Council member Bryan Frye said the new facility will be a great asset for public safety.
