The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam that is demanding payment of a fine.

A caller claims to be from the Sheriff’s Office, and he tells a resident that a citation has been issued for missing jury duty.  The caller then tells the victim to pay a fine to avoid being arrested.

The Sheriff’s Office said it does not solicit payment for any fines over the phone or in person.  Scammers are also using “spoofing” on Caller ID to make the phone call look legitimate.   Residents are urged to avoid giving any personal information, including a social security number, to someone who calls them, and they should never pay the caller over the phone with a credit card, debit card, gift card or prepaid debit card.

If you receive a call like this and want to confirm whether it’s legitimate, you can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 316-660-3880.    Residents who have been a victim of this scam should report it to their local law enforcement agency.
