A crash left two people dead and a third person injured in southeast Wichita early Wednesday.
Sedgwick County sheriff’s investigators said two vehicles were traveling west on Pawnee and Woodlawn around 2:30 a.m., and one car hit a utility pole and overturned, ejecting all three people inside. Two female passengers in that car were killed, and they were identified as 20-year-old Lian Awadi and 19-year-old Carol Chakra, both from Wichita. The driver, 20-year-old. Juma Ahmad of Wichita, was taken to a hospital in serious condition and later released.
The Sheriff’s Office said the people in the second car were not hurt and their vehicle did not have contact with the car that overturned, but they knew the people in that car.
Investigators believe speed is a likely factor in the crash, but it is still under investigation. Anyone with information on the crash is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Patrol Division at 316-660-3760.
