Police offer tips for Halloween trick-or-treating

Neighborhoods will be filled with trick or treaters for Halloween Tuesday evening, and Wichita police are urging parents and children to follow safety tips.

Youngsters should wear visible and reflective Halloween costumes so they can be easily seen, and they should be accompanied by a parent or an older sibling.    They’re also urged to start early and avoid staying out late.   Youngsters should also stay on sidewalks and cross streets at intersections and crosswalks.

Parents are urged to inspect all candy their children bring home, checking to make sure the candy is properly wrapped.  Youngsters should avoid eating the candy until their parents have a chance to inspect it.

Douglas will be closed between Roosevelt and Crestway starting at 6 p.m. and barricades will be set up in the College Hill neighborhood, where a large turnout is expected to see the elaborate Halloween displays that residents have set up.  The Q-Line trolley will not be running east of Hillside, starting at 5:30 p.m., in order to make things safer for trick-or-treaters.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has tips for drivers:

  • Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
  • Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
  • Watch out for pedestrians when turning at intersections. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
  • Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.

There are also safety tips for children in walking safely around their neighborhoods:

  • Stick to sidewalks or paths. Don’t walk through neighbors’ yards, as there may be a hazard you can’t see.
  • If there are no sidewalks along your street, walk on the road facing traffic as far to left as possible.
  • Always stop and look before you cross the street, and cross at corners using signals and crosswalks whenever possible. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
  • Watch for cars that are turning or backing up and teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
  • Put electronic devices away and pay attention to avoid hazards.
