The Great Plains Transportation Museum in Wichita has started a fundraising drive for a restoration of an historic Santa Fe Railway locomotive.

Locomotive No. 93 was built by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors at La Grange, Illinois in late 1967.   The locomotive pulled freight and passenger trains between Chicago and California and also ran routes to Texas.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway donated the locomotive to the museum in 1999.

The museum is looking to raise $193,000 for a full cosmetic restoration of the locomotive.   The funds will also cover mechanical work to move the locomotive from Wichita to Kansas City for the restoration work and then return it to Wichita for display.

Actor Michael Gross, who is a Santa Fe Railway fan, will be the spokesperson for the fundraising campaign.   Gross is best known for the “Family Ties” TV series and the “Tremors” movie series.

Donations can be made through the web site www.santafe93.com or by visiting the Great Plains Transportation Museum at 700 East Douglas.
