Maren Morris announced she is cutting her ties with Country Music – arguably the genre that made her famous. She says that contemporary country music has become nothing more than political posturing. She went on to say, “I thought I’d like to burn it to the ground and start over. But it’s burning itself down without my help.”

Look, the country is certainly divided. And as far back as you wanna go, Country Music has always reflected what was happening in America. Could some artists exploit this for a buck? Yeah. But, I still believe Country music comes from a genuine place – and whatever moves people – is personal to them.

What I don’t like is people throwing darts at each other. The feuding between Maren and Britney Aldean has been well publicized. People have tossed around labels and tried to ‘other’ the other individuals… or at least the press has sensationalized it all. You do you… whoever YOU are. Cultivate YOUR audience, but lets not tear each other down.

I use Dolly as an example. Dolly has one of the most diverse audiences on the planet. She writes songs that hold up individuals and groups of people. She embraces all. She is very inclusive – and supports all sorts of causes. Somehow she does this with country charm and grace – and even people with differing views find a way to respect that. It is who SHE is.  So Maren, I wish you all the best.

KFDI listeners embraced Maren and her first song, “My Church.” You may remember that KFDI had Maren at the Cotillion for a St. Jude benefit in January of 2017. It was a sell out. We raised $19,500 for the kids at St. Jude. It was a great night full of good vibes… thanks to Maren.

Soon after she released a song called “I Could Use A Love Song.” It was my personal favorite of ANY of her songs. Very Country. A sweet vocal and I loved it. So did the KFDI listeners. KFDI led the nation in airplay and it became her first #1 on the Country charts! That was pretty cool.

Strangely, as she moves on from country music… she delivers a beautiful, delicate, sincere, dare I say, `Country’ vocal, on one of her exit songs. The video for “Get The Hell Out Of Here” is below.

Whatever direction Maren goes with her music – Whatever she choses to stand up for – I wish her well. Artists know who they are and they should stay true to that. I just think it is a good reminder to ask, “what would Dolly do!” But that’s me.
